My Uncle Just Updated Me...

CBGB's, epicenter of live punk, closing its doors

NEW YORK (AP) -- Legs McNeil remembers the night back in 1975 when he walked into the dingy storefront club perched in the even dingier Bowery neighborhood. The band onstage, four guys in leather jackets and torn jeans, was the Ramones. McNeil sat at a nearby table, watching their set with Lou Reed.

It was unforgettable. But as McNeil would soon discover, it was just a typical night at CBGB's, the club that spawned punk rock while launching the careers of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Blondie, the Talking Heads and the Ramones.

"Every night was memorable, except I don't remember 'em," said a laughing McNeil, co-author of the punk rock history "Please Kill Me."

After Sunday, memories are all that will remain when the cramped club with its capacity of barely 300 people goes out of business after 33 years. Although its boom years are long gone, CBGB's remained a Manhattan music scene fixture: part museum, part barroom, home to more than a few rock and roll ghosts.

The club didn't exit without a fight. An assortment of high-profile backers, including E Street Band guitarist Little Steven Van Zandt, battled to keep the legendary club open. But in the end, it was a simple landlord-tenant dispute -- and owner Hilly Kristal saw the handwriting on the club's dank walls.

"I knew the closing was inevitable, because my lawyers said, `You can't win this case. The law is that your lease is up, and they don't even need a reason to put you out,"' said Kristal.

This week we are making a new church office.  As a treat I took some of our students and leaders to the Korean film festival at the University of the Philippines.  The opening ceremony was pretty cool, I mean they had the ambassador of Korea there to give a speech about the power of film and culture.  It was pretty cool to hear that because those are two of my biggest passions as of now and to share the experience with my group was awesome.  Great film!  Happy belated anniversary to G-luv and special sauce!

In October our church has the opportunity to serve with a Teacher's retreat camp.  The concept of a camp and 3 day teaching seminar for Teachers is just genius.  All the energy, preparation, and yes even the wild games go into making this week just as fun, if not more than the youth camp.

This past weekend we visited three local area high schools to invite teachers in order to prepare our registration.  To our suprise, because of the hard work of so many in the past, the department head of our high school district got involved this year because she was impressed by last years camp and sent out a letter to all of the high schools in the Rizal area.  As of now there are over a thousand teachers registered from this district alone.

Also from our visit, two of the schools asked if we were able to create and hold a few workshops and assemblies for their students and leaders due to the lack of a program budget for their speacial events and guest speakers.  One school has even asked our associate youth pastor to start a Bible club in the school.  Since last week we have already set a date for a leadership seminar in the first high school and are finalizing preparation for the Bible club.

Even though a typhoon knocked out our power yesterday during youth group, we split our students into four small groups.  I made copies of my notes and key verses and our counselors continued the message by the lights of their cell phone.  We were 112 in attendance.  Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Ahhhh the nightmares continue.  Why do I do this to myself.  Oh well...on with the goods!

We concluded our HABITS series and it went great.  Another young girl was saved yesterday and we are following up on her this week.

On Friday we had our second official Jam session class.  We have held several practices on a weekly basis over the past year and a half but now we gave the ministry a weekly time.  Last week we had four in attendance and it went great.  To my suprise on last Friday we had 30 students, many of which we didn't know attend the practice.  Needless to say it was great and we can't wait to see how our students and their friends can continue in their future service.

Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers.

As we are going through our 'Habits' series with our teens, we are trying to introduce and establish habits that will last for life.  This week we studied the commands and potential of tithes and offerings.  As I was describing the definition of offerings by using the text of 2 Corinthians 9:5-11, I described offerings as seed or "buto" in Tagalog, because seeds have the potential of growth and producing fruit.  The passage said that sowing seeds bring a like harvest, every seed brings froth fruit after its kind, and your offerings bring about a specific harvest.  As an illustration I asked the students if I planted a watermelon seed what kind of fruit would I get.  They all answered, "watermelons."  Then continuing in the verse and explaining how one's offerings bring about a specific harvest I asked, "If you give with a good attitude, what will that produce?"  A student quickly answered, "LOTS OF WATERMELONS!"  Don't worry the rest of the message went well.  After the message our discipleship started and one of our leaders Helen Francisco lead a girl to the Lord.

Last night the silent German film festival ended with the film 'Asphalt' and the score was provided by Mrs. Cynthia Alexander.  Her and her four bandmates sat on the floor indian style for the entire 2 hours playing keyboards, snare drum, percussion, sitar (sp), guitar(s), etc...it was definately an experience.
